They have had Bill Clinton. They have had Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards (all in a single episode). They have had John McCain. Obama Wins Historic Nomination, Makes Surprise Dnc Appearance
Barack Obama made history Wednesday as he formally won the Democratic Party's nomination for president -- making him the first African American to lead a major party ticket. Obama made a surprise speech in Denver at the DNC, his first on-stage appearance at the convention with VP running mate Sen. Joe Biden. In his speech, the Democratic presidential nominee praised his wife Michelle for her DNC speech, saying she "kicked it off pretty well." Obama also commended former competitor Sen. Hillary Clinton. "If I'm not mistaken, Hillary Clinton rocked the house down last night!" he told the enthusiastic crowd. He also publicly thanked former President Bill Clinton for being "a president who actually puts people first." Obama is expected to make a substantial speech Thursday night at the DNC, which he announced will be moved to Invesco Field at Mile High to accommodate a larger crowd. To prepare for Thursday night, Obama is said to be looking at the nomination speeches of former Presidents Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy, the Associated Press reports.[Read full story on The Insider]
Clinton Backs Barack And Biden At Dnc
Former President Bill Clinton took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Denver Wednesday night to heap praise on his wife Hillary's former political foe and to help unite the Democratic party -- before introducing Barack Obama's pick for his vice presidential running mate, Joe Biden. The 42nd president approached the podium to the strains of his own DNC theme song, Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop," and had to wait for the crowd to settle down. "I am here first for Barack Obama, and second I'm here to warm up the crowd for Joe Biden," he said, before acknowledging Hillary's remarkable campaign for the Democratic nomination -- joking that it generated enough heat to increase global warming -- and confessing his disappointment that, "In the end, my candidate didn't win." "Like Hillary, I want all of you who supported her to vote for Barack Obama in November," he continued. "Barack Obama is ready to honor the oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Barack Obama is ready to be President of the United States." Clinton passed the torch to Biden to the strains of U2's "Beautiful Day," followed by an inspirational tribute video to U.S. veterans by Steven Spielberg, featuring an appearance by Tom Hanks. Then Biden's son, Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, made his father's official introduction after a stirring speech recounting the adversity they overcame with the tragic deaths in their family (his first wife, Neilia, and their infant daughter Naomi died in a car crash in 1972) -- and how they rebuilt their lives. With the "Ain't That America" chorus of John Mellencamp's "Pink Houses" blaring on the house speakers, Delaware Senator Biden thanked his wife Jill and son and delivered his acceptance speech: "Yes, yes, I accept your nomination to run and serve with Barack Obama, the next President of the United States." "John McCain is my friend; we've traveled the world together -- it's a friendship that goes beyond politics," he later said about the Republican presidential nominee. "But I profoundly disagree with the direction John wants to take this country." And in a climactic moment to the night, Barack came out from backstage to stand side-by-side with his vice presidential pick. "I think the convention's gone pretty well so far, don't you think?" he boomed to the frenzied crowd before welcoming everyone to join him for his speech at Mile High Stadium Thursday night. "I think Michelle Obama kicked it off pretty well, don't you think? If I'm not mistaken, Hillary Clinton rocked the house last night. And just in case you were wondering, I think President Clinton reminded us of what it's like when you put a president first." Stay tuned for all the highlights and on-the-floor-coverage of the DNC![Read full story on The Insider]
Hillary Clinton: 'proud Supporter' Of Obama!
Hillary Clinton delivered a ringing presidential endorsement for Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Denver Tuesday night, saying, "I'm here tonight as a proud mother, as a proud Democrat, as a proud senator from New York, a proud American, and a proud supporter of Barack Obama." After an inspirational video narrated by Chelsea Clinton, Chelsea introduced "my hero, and my mother" to the appreciative DNC crowd, who welcomed the New York senator with thunderous applause. Former President Bill Clinton watched from the wings to show his love and support for his wife. "Whether you voted for me or you voted for Barack, the time is now to unite as a single party for a single purpose," she said. "We are on the same team and none of us can afford to sit on the sidelines." Dressed in a tangerine power suit, Hillary also added a shout-out to her staunch female contingent of supporters, whom she affectionately called the "sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits," saying, "Thank you, because you never gave in and you never gave up." She also praised Michelle Obama's DNC speech, saying, "Anyone who saw Michelle's speech last night will know that she will be a great first lady for America." Obama's former political foe ran an extremely competitive campaign until the eleventh hour until she conceded the race back in June due to Obama's superior tally of delegates. She has been a staunch ally and supporter of the Democratic presidential candidate ever since.
