Bill Clinton Presents Steven Spielberg With Liberty Medal
Former President Bill Clinton showed Steven Spielberg brotherly love by presenting him with the Liberty Medal on Thursday in Philadelphia. Clinton praised Spielberg, saying, "We honor a man today who has always been able to make a simple story and remind us of the greatness in us all," according to the Associated Press. The esteemed filmmaker accepted this honor by saying, "Art is and should endeavor to be among the human enterprises which contribute to the building of decent and free societies." The National Constitution Center elects one recipient every year for the Liberty Medal who represents the principles the United States was founded on. Spielberg's Academy Award-winning films 'Schindler's List' and 'Saving Private Ryan' stand out as two examples of how the filmmaker represents liberty through his artistic endeavors. Whoopi Goldberg also took part in the ceremony. The Liberty Medal was founded in 1988. Accomplished figures such as Bono, Nelson Mandela, and Jimmy Carter have received this award in previous years.[Read full story on The Insider]

Former President Bill Clinton Pays Tribute To Walter Cronkite At Memorial Service
Former President Bill Clinton joined current President Barack Obama and journalists Barbara Walters, Matt Lauer, Andy Rooney and many others at a memorial service held for the late Walter Cronkite. Clinton spoke to those gathered, paying tribute to the former CBS newscaster. "He had an inquiring mind, a caring heart and a careful devotion to the facts," Clinton said of Cronkite. As the CBS anchorman for almost 20 years, Cronkite's dependability and everyman demeanor comforted audiences through such lows as the President Kennedy assassination and cheered them in such highs as America landing on the moon. "He was always looking for the story, not the storyline," Clinton says. "He was a good man." Cronkite passed away on July 17 at the age of 92. He is survived by his three children Nancy, Mary and Walter.[Read full story on The Insider]
Journalists Laura Ling And Euna Lee Break Silence
Since being returned home by the valiant efforts of former President Bill Clinton last month, Current TV journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee write a detailed account of the events leading up to their imprisonment. The women were led across the North Korean border by a trusted tour guide in the early morning hours of March 17 of this year. Realizing the danger they were putting themselves in, they returned to the Chinese side of the border quickly. It was already too late, as North Korean soldiers were running toward them with rifles drawn. Ling and Lee say, "We were firmly back in China when the soldiers apprehended us." Imprisoned for 140 days, the two young journalists were sentenced to 12 years of hard labor. Following a meeting with Clinton, the North Korean government agreed to nullify this sentence and pardoned the women. In retrospect, Ling and Lee question their judgment in trusting this tour guide. Taking full responsibility they say, "But it was ultimately our decision to follow him, and we continue to pay for that decision today with dark memories of our captivity." The women remain committed to the issue of human trafficking that they sought out to investigate. In an effort to protect their secretive sources, they "furtively destroyed evidence in our possession by swallowing notes and damaging videotapes." To read Ling and Lee’s story in full, visit Current TV.[Read full story on The Insider]

Ling reveals how she and Euna found out they would be coming home. "We feared that at any moment we could be sent to a hard labor camp and suddenly we were told we were going to a meeting and we were taken to a location and we walked through the doors we saw standing before us, President Bill Clinton," she said. "We were shocked. But we knew instantly in our heart that the nightmare of our lives was finally coming to and end and now we stand here home and free. "Euna and I would like to express our deepest gratitude towards Bill Clinton ... to our loved ones, friends, colleagues, and to the complete strangers with the kindness of hearts who showed up so much love and sent u so many positive thought and energy. We could feel your love all the way in the North Korea -- it's what kept us going." Laura said that after nearly five months away, she and Euna just wanted to spend quality time with their families. "We are so anxious right now to spend some quiet private time to get reacquainted with our families." Meanwhile, President Obama spoke about the women returning home.
