The prostitute who was arrested for burglary after Alex Trebek chased her down a hotel hallway told police -- she was in the hotel to meet a John, but it was NOT Alex.

TMZ spoke with the prostitute's lawyer, Mark Jacobs, who tells us Lucinda Moyers just happened to be on the same floor where Alex was fast asleep with his wife.  Jacobs says there's no proof Lucinda entered Alex's room and stole anything, but he did not explain why Alex would have chased her down the hallway, injuring his Achilles tendon.

Jacobs is insistent -- Alex is "an innocent victim."

The woman who allegedly stole a bunch of stuff from Alex Trebek's San Francisco hotel room last month is a prostitute, not a thief ... so says her lawyer.

The "Jeopardy" host claims the female suspect, 56-year-old Lucinda Moyers, broke into his hotel room and jacked $650 in cash, a bracelet and other items on July 26 ... and then he injured himself chasing her down the hallway.

But Moyers' lawyer, Mark Jacobs (not the designer) -- tells the San Francisco Examiner the woman was at the hotel to meet an unidentified john ... and did not break into Trebek's room.

Jacobs has not given specific details on how Trebek and Moyers crossed paths.

The woman accused of breaking into Alex Trebek's hotel room last week just pled not guilt to felony charges of burglary and possession of stolen property.

56-year-old Lucinda Moyers (pictured above) is currently being held on $625 THOUSAND bail for allegedly taking cash and a bracelet from the "Jeopardy" host's San Francisco hotel room.

Trebek claims he chased Moyers down the hall -- and ruptured his Achilles tendon in the process.

Moyers is due back in court on August 15.

The female suspect in the Alex Trebek burglary case has been officially slapped with a restraining order, which means she has to stay the hell away from the "Jeopardy" host and his wife -- or else!

According to the San Francisco D.A., 56-year-old Lucinda Moyers must stay at least 150 yards away from the Trebeks.

The judge also set Moyers' bail at $625,000 -- after prosecutors pointed out she had two burglary convictions on her record from back in the '90s.

As TMZ previously reported, Trebek says he snapped his Achilles tendon while chasing after the suspect ... after she allegedly took cash and a bracelet from his hotel room.

Trebek -- perhaps the greatest Canadian who ever lived -- crutched his way into the National Geographic World Championship at Google headquarters in CA today and explained he was trying to catch a burglar when the injury occurred.

Trebek says he's feeling OK.

It's unclear if the suspect was ever captured ... or what he allegedly stole ... but we're willing to wager that Alex won't rest until JUSTICE is served!!!!

UPDATE: The suspect has been ARRESTED ... and according to ABC7 in SF ... the alleged bad guy is actually an alleged bad girl.

Cops say a 56-year-old woman was booked on felony burglary and possession of stolen property after allegedly entering Trebek's room and taking cash and a bracelet his mother gave him ... and then stashing it near an ice machine on Trebek's floor.

Trebek injured himself while chasing the woman down the hallway.
